Walter Prati è un artista di eccezionale spessore nel panorama della musica contemporanea, con un talento sopraffino nella composizione e nell’esecuzione, anche nell’ambito dell’elettronica e della sperimentazione sonora. Musicista dalla grande versatilità – senza ricordare tutte le sue collaborazioni, almeno quella con Evan Parker, cominciata nel 1987, e quelle con Robert Wyatt e Giancarlo Schiaffini è opportuno menzionarle – è capace di coniugare il lirismo più poetico con la ricerca di sonorità inedite, talvolta ruvide e aspre: sempre tuttavia nell’orizzonte di una profonda espressività. Il nuovo disco per la Amirani (registrato nel 2020: sì proprio nel bel mezzo del lockdown) lo vede alle prese con il suo violoncello, e l’elettronica, in un personale dialogo con lo strumento. L’album per contrabbasso solo non è certo una novità nella musica d’avanguardia e improvvisata – si pensi all’abbastanza recente ‘Clouds (2020) di Hannah Marshall. E tuttavia ci vuole una grande maestria, una grande arte e un grande mestiere per lanciarsi in una simile avventura. Un’avventura che, in vari episodi, ci raccontano le cinque ninne nanne e le otto storie che Prati qui ci regala. Dalla prima ninna nanna, che ci trasporta, cullandoci, in un’atmosfera dolce e inquietante allo stesso tempo, sino all’ultima storia, il mondo musicale di Prati è affascinante, ancorché, a tratti, tenebroso. Le storie sono generalmente dotate di sonorità più ritmicamente intense e timbricamente stridenti (con qualche eccezione: per esempio la storia quarta) e sono talvolta espanse in mirabolanti riverberi; le ninne nanne funzionano da malinconica consolazione, come una carezza che, per quanto non rassicurante sino in fondo, ci consola per un momento; ridandoci però una qualche vivacità allorché, come nella quarta ninna nanna, il pizzicato crea un attraente diversivo. L’atmosfera emotiva che emerge è suggestiva, ed è ben colta anche dalle note di copertina di Gianni Mimmo e Giuliano Corti.

Walter Prati’s composition for cello seems to interpret this range of facets, these transparent and elusive angles. Contemplative music, to a certain extent, but also ready to express fragments lyrically, and their rushing to compose a mosaic. For reasons I cannot explain, I catch a glimpse of several iridescent colours, between turquoise and hard blue with odd crimson striping.
It is a matter of ripples, I would say, on a quiet and broad sea, whose hidden dangers can be disguised just beyond the crest of every wave.
Perhaps it is music paying its respects to an intimate boundary, though investigating extensive categories.
The pizzicato and the bow linger soberly upon legible lines yet treading on a ridge which seems that it could crumble at any moment.
Blurring in a sort of dust and dispersing, maybe, if it did not occur for a sudden backlight to reveal the ineffable depth of this music in the air.
So do these Lullabies and other stories tell us about elusiveness and double perspective.

Cellist Walter Prati’s solo work Lullabies and Stories is a collection of relatively short pieces for cello with and without electronics. The thirteen pieces – five “lullabies” and eight “stories” – are diverse in sound and structure, but are held together by a minor-shaded theme which is introduced on the opening track and which recurs, with variations, at different points on the album. Prati’s playing encompasses a broad range of cello techniques from straight-ahead classical to extended bowings and fingerings. He supplements the cello’s natural voice with electronics on a number of pieces, using looping, sound manipulation, and heavy reverb to enhance and multiply the effects produced by bow and fingers alone. No matter what techniques or electronic effects Prati puts to use, the music maintains an emotional warmth over the course of the entire album.
Sì, d’accordo: il contributo di Walter Prati con l’elettronica dal vivo alle opere più riuscite di Evan Parker quando il celebre sassofonista inglese agisce a capo dell’ElectroAcoustic Ensemble, è decisivo. Ciò accade da quasi tre decenni e i titoli sono tanti, basterebbe citare quel Fixing the Fluctuating Ideas, stratosferico, pubblicato dalla Victo nel 2021 ma registrato al festival di Victoriaville nel 1996 con la partecipazione fantastica della vocalista Sainkho Namtchylak. D’accordo. Ma non sarà mica obbligatorio parlare del valore di Prati come partner di Evan Parker e non parlare direttamente di Prati, della sua propria musica, delle opere che tratteggiano il suo ritratto di autore. Come non è mai stato obbligatorio, che so, parlare di Don Cherry come partner (paritario) di Ornette Coleman e trascurare tutto quello che ha fatto come leader e ideatore. Recenti uscite impongono di occuparsi di Prati, di questo importante, vitale, curioso, multiforme violoncellista e compositore, regista, strumentista di musica elettronica. Violoncello primo amore. È in primo piano nelle tredici composizioni riunite nell’album Lullabies and Others Stories (Amirani Records). Prati autore e solista. C’è anche l’elettronica. Usata nel trattamento/trasformazione delle risorse dello strumento acustico, sempre con massima discrezione, con delicatezza. Quando accade che venga usata come produttrice di suoni sintetici con ruolo autonomo, unico caso First Story, è come una nuvola di suoni dentro un brano vivace che riprende i modi della free improvisation. Questa nell’insieme è la «musica moderna», ma moderna vuol dire dell’oggi più recente, proprio oggi. Romanticismo e strutture barocche, lirismo, tocchi persino nostalgici, leggere incursioni nel classico radicalismo avant-garde: tutto si muove in questa suite di brevi movimenti. È la musica dell’attualità: incroci, ritorni, proiezioni.
Walter Prati est connu pour son travail de musicien électronique et sound processing dans l’Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble des années 1990 à 2010 (de Towards the Margins jusqu’à Hasselt) a aussi enregistré, toujours comme artiste électronique deux albums en duo avec Evan Parker : Hall of Mirrors en 1990, réédité en double CD avec l’album Pulse (2016) du même duo sur le label Auditorium. Son travail de transformation du son fut à la base de la création de cet ensemble qui inclus aussi Joel Ryan, Lawrence Casserley, Richard Barrett, Paul Obermayer et son ami Bill Vecchi. On l’a aussi entendu en duo avec Giancarlo Schiaffini et en trio avec Thurston Moore et Evan Parker. Mais j’ignorais que Walter Prati est un excellent violoncelliste. Dans cet enregistrement de 2020, il nous fait entendre cinq Lullabies et huit Stories au violoncelle dans un genre qu’on pourrait qualifier de « post-classique » ou contemporain. Au violoncelle, il ajoute de temps en temps des electronics « (Cycling ’74 Max and Grm Tools). Minutieux, distingué et un peu austère ou parfois grandiose, son travail, excellemment enregistré dans son MMT Creative Lab à Milan, mérite le plus grand intérêt pour toutes les techniques utilisées et leur insertion judicieuse dans le contexte de compositions miniatures qui les mettent en valeur. Pizzicato, glissandi, évocations mélodiques, suggestions harmoniques, lyrisme détaché et ferveur retenue. Tout comme les enregistrements en solo des violoncellistes Guilherme Rodrigues et Emmanuel Cremer, ces Lullabies and Other Storiessituent plusieurs facettes de l’approche de l’instrument en exergue dans l’écoulement de la performance, ici réalisée de Mars à Juin 2022 avec une superbe cohérence. Exemplaire et à réécouter avec un vrai plaisir.
Νανουρίσματα και άλλες ιστορίες λοιπόν, για τσέλο και ηλεκτρονικά, από τον ιταλό μουσικό, που καταγράφεται εδώ από μία performance του στο MMT Creative Lab του Μιλάνου, που συνέβη μεταξύ Μαρτίου-Ιουνίου 2020.
Τα κομμάτια του CD είναι δεκατρία και περίπου εναλλάσσονται από lullaby σε story, από τη θέση 1 έως την θέση 13. Βασικά έχουμε πέντε lullaby και οκτώ story.
Το πρώτο lullaby (“First lullaby”) είναι ένα κομμάτι για σόλο τσέλο, με δοξάρι, κάπως βαρύ και κάπως αργό, μελωδικό φυσικά, που θεωρητικά είναι ιδανικό για... νανούρισμα.
Το αμέσως επόμενο όμως, και πρώτο story (“First story”) είναι κάτι τελείως διαφορετικό – και γιατί το παίξιμο στο τσέλο γίνεται πιτσικάτο (και όχι άρκο) και γιατί υπάρχει εδώ χαμηλού προφίλ ηλεκτρονικό μανιπουλάρισμα. Το άκουσμα έχει μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον, έχει οπωσδήποτε πειραματική χροιά, αλλά είναι συμπαγές και επιβλητικό, δίχως να «κλωτσάει» τον ακροατή.
Όμως τα δύο επόμενα κομμάτια, το “Second lullaby” και το “Second story”, μοιάζουν περισσότερο με το πρώτο lullaby, με το τσέλο με δοξάρι να πρωταγωνιστεί, για να φθάσουμε στο επόμενο παράξενο track, που είναι το πέμπτο στη σειρά και που αποκαλείται “Thirdlullaby”. Εδώ το τσέλο, με παίξιμο με δοξάρι είναι κυρίαρχο και πάλι, αλλά ο παραγόμενος, τελικός, ήχος, έχει προέλθει από επιτόπια επεξεργασία, που του προσδίδει «βάθος» και μία ελαφρά αντήχηση.
Γενικώς με τέτοια εναλλακτικά παιξίματα προχωράει το “Lullabies and Other Stories”, δημιουργώντας ένα περίεργο ηχητικό μωσαϊκό, μια παράσταση κυματισμών, που δείχνει να οπτικοποιούνται στο εξώφυλλο του άλμπουμ – μια ζωγραφιά του ίδιου του Walter Prati, επιλεγμένη από μια ευρύτερη σειρά ανάλογων σχεδίων, στην οποία (σειρά) αποτυπώνονται όλα τα κομμάτια του άλμπουμ.
